i haven't been posting since november but now i'm back... i am full of ideas for what will be the paintings i will use to apply to the schools this year. i still haven't made the final decision but i have 2 main ideas to choose from.
one of them is to continue the series of paintings about linda and rails. trips to meet her and trips away from her. but at the end i think i will keep this series to my self and not use it as an application.
the second idea, and the one i am most probably going to use, is to make a series of paintings following the alien. linda has come up with this great project and i have been thinking about it quite a lot. it would be a series of the alien in different situations that highlight its misplacement in its surroundings. i have to choose the images very carefully since it is this surrounding that will give the right strength to the series.
they definitely have to be far away from cliched contexts.
i hope to start getting the clarity as i start working on it.

linda

..........................................linda (2005) 160*120

i guess this painting talks for its self... but both formally and thematically this is a new phase in my painting. formally it consists of 48 individual parts, all the colour parts are direct digital prints and the rest is oil paint done on b/w digital prints. thematically it moves away from the dark urban paintings to new, beautiful inspirations... :)

misplacement: alien invasions

...........................................................................................alien invasion (2005)

i made this electronic image not only in response to the deaths that occurred in ceuta and melilla during october and november this year but also very much inspired by linda lund's alien project on misplacement and border crossing. she is sending a green plastic alien travelling around the world with friends as well as random travellers. they will then write upon their own border crossing experiences and foward them here along with pictures of the alien's journeys.

19 african men were killed while trying to climb the razor-wired fences. sometimes shot from behind by spanish and morrocan immigration authorities. thousands desperately tried to climb this fences during these months but the number of successful crossings is unknown. hundreds of them where captured by the moroccan authorities, taken on buses to the southern deserts and dumped often without food or water. this is only a very small part of the whole immigration issue in europe but its significance drew me to make this painting. my hope is that its electronic format will allow for an easy printing of copies...

series: corners

.............
........... corner I (2005)................................................... corner II (2005)

.............
..................... corner III (2005)........................................................corner IV (2005)

i started working on this series preparing for the application to the academy of arts in helsinki, sadly i didn't get accepted but i hope you enjoy them... it consists of 5 paintings (one of them is missing but hopefully i will have an image soon to publish {santi i need the pic ;) } ) it is focused on images of persons working on the corners of bogotá. people cleaning car windows or selling fruits and other micellaneous things. the fifth painting is a big long horizontal image of a street-light on a red background. 2 of the paintings are digital prints on a special canvas and oil painted. this way i took the use of photo one step further by just not only having the "original image" added to the painting but now having the print of the photo as an integral part of the painting.

series: bogo II

.......

man on street II (2000).205*120.....................................man on street I (2000) 80*55

............Bus (2000) 50*50/100*50

continuing with the streets of bogotá and the use of ink i started this series. the streets of bogotá are something that always struck me. captivatinging me... a city where the colours often seem disappearear (something i experienced once more in the totally opposit environmentent of the rovaniemi fall after the trees loose the leaves). a city where sunshine is a misfit and only cloudy days and wet curbs and pavement suit. a city of buses smog and street-inhabitants. one of the many bogotás.

Self-portraits (1999)

...............
getting to know the streets (1999)................... helping man (1999)

............watching educational t.v. (1999)

this was an exercise on self-portrait. i don't like portraying my self but it worked better than i expected. mainly the topic on them was a critique to my lack of activity during that time. days gone and nothing done. periods of nothingness that have cost me much. in them i introduced for the first time the actual photo in the painting, making a game between representation of a representation. (painting-photo-"reality"). if i remember right i made them all with the fingers in an attempt to give a deeper self. again using the ink as the source.

series: blue and red Torsos
(1998)

..........
red torso I (50*65) ................................................. .............blue torso I (60*70)
...........
blue torso II (50*60) .............................................................. blue torso III (55*70)

...........
blue torso IV (50*60)..............................................................blue torso V (50*60)

red torso II (55*65)

this series of paintings was very important to me because it was the first time i fully painted with nothing but industrial inks (the kind used for mass serigrafie). i had been playing with them by using them in some drawings but not more. an other important painting was one that gave the meaning to the colours i use. it was called "white red and black are the memories i no longer have". in the torso series i introduced blue.
actually all these paintings are just red and blue (some white and black) straight from the can, as a result of the violence they talk about. an overwhelming density of violent acts. wounds to the side. the thick ink did the job nicely.
